Eureka City Council Votes 3-2 to Declare Shelter Crisis

This was done over the dissent of Councilmembers Marian Brady and Melinda Ciarabellini.

Councilmember Linda Atkins made significant changes to the resolution brought to the meeting by city staff.  The changes allowing for less red tape in creating innovative solutions to our immediate and ongoing homeless crisis.

Thank you Linda for your strength, tactics and perseverance.  Thank you Kim and Natalie for the courage in standing up with Linda on this.

The public and outside agencies now have more leeway in community efforts to reduce suffering, that, it must be said, has been aggravated by ill-timed homeless-mobilization strategies.

Let’s get to work for those who need shelter, warmth and rest during this long, wet and cold El Niño winter.
